About Adventures into the Unknown
Adventures into the Unknown is an American horror comic published by the American Comics Group, running 174 issues from Fall 1948 to August 1967. Popular culture historian Ron Goulart called it "the first continuing-series horror comic." Its first issues carried the B&I Publishing imprint, with Richard E. Hughes as editor.
It was a horror anthology, and its first two issues featured stories of ghosts, werewolves, haunted houses and killer puppets. Horror and science fiction writer Frank Belknap Long, a friend of H. P. Lovecraft, wrote for the series from its first issue. Issue #1 featured "The Werewolf Stalks," drawn by Ed Moritz, with further art by Fred Guardineer, Max Elkan and King Ward, and it included a seven-page adaptation of Horace Walpole's gothic novel The Castle of Otranto, drawn by Al Ulmer. Issue #2 continued the Living Ghost serial and added tales such as "Kill, Puppets, Kill" and "The Master's Hand."
Unlike many horror comics of its day, it survived the 1954 Senate hearings, then outlasted the arrival of the Comics Code by toning down into milder fantasy. In 1965, issue #154 introduced Nemesis, a ghostly superhero. Dark Horse began collecting the early issues in hardcover in 2012.
