About Black Cat Mystery

Black Cat Mystery is a 1950s horror comic from Harvey Publications, the title carried by issues #30 to #53 of Black Cat Comics from 1951 to 1954. That book, starring a stuntwoman turned crimefighter, ran 29 issues before switching to horror stories in 1951. Issue #30 still put the heroine on its cover, and the numbering ran on under other titles until April 1963.

Issue #50, dated June 1954, mixes five-page comic stories with brief text pieces. In "The King Is Dead," pencilled by Manny Stallman and inked by John Giunta, three men want to know why lonely old Wilkie Watts has been stealing corpses. "Moe Gambo," pencilled by Bob Powell and inked by Howard Nostrand, parodies the 1953 film Mogambo with a hunter and a woman who will stop at nothing to have him. The Grand Comics Database credits the cover to Lee Elias and records Frank Frazetta assisting Sid Check's inks on six panels of "Here Today..."

After the Comics Code Authority took effect, Harvey gradually shifted away from horror toward children's comics. PS Artbooks began collecting the series in 2012, and "Here Today..." was reprinted in Fantagraphics' Four Color Fear in 2010.
