About Captain Science

Captain Science is an American science fiction comic book from Youthful Magazines, published for seven issues between November 1950 and December 1951. Each issue held four comic strips, two of them featuring Captain Science, plus a two-page text story or article. The hero is physicist Gordon Dane, named Captain Science by a dying alien who warns that the evil Rak are conquering the universe, and he is helped by his young protege Rip Gary.

Issue #1, dated November 1950, introduced the character and his origin in "Tracking the Flying Saucers," followed by "Traitors to the Earth," both pencilled by Gus Schrotter. It also includes "The Monster God of Rogor," a seven-page story signed by Wally Wood, and a two-page text story with photos from George Pal's 1950 film Destination Moon.

Artists across the run included Bill Molno, Harry Harrison, Joe Orlando, Gus Schrotter and Wally Wood, with Wood and Orlando sharing art duties. The Encyclopedia of Science Fiction names "The Insidious Doctor Khartoum" in issue #4 as the best story and says it benefits from "lively artwork from Orlando and Wood." The title then became Fantastic, which continued the numbering from #8, and PS Publishing collected all seven issues in a 2016 book.
