About Fightin' Army
Fightin' Army is a war comic published by Charlton Comics from 1956 to 1984, an anthology that ran for 157 bimonthly issues. It told fictional stories of the United States Army, alongside sister titles Fightin' Air Force, Fightin' Marines and Fightin' Navy. It continued the numbering of Charlton's Soldier and Marine Comics, and from 1978 it was mostly reprints.
Issues #76 to #92 (1967 to 1970, skipping #81) carried "The Lonely War of Capt. Willy Schultz," a World War II serial written by Will Franz and drawn by Sam Glanzman. Schultz, a U.S. Army captain falsely convicted of murder, escapes and blends into the German Army while trying to clear his name. Franz was 16 when he began it; Glanzman was a seasoned artist and World War II veteran. Dark Horse collected the story in 2023 with a new final chapter by Wayne Vansant.
Issue #76 opens the saga beside a World War II story by Joe Gill and Juan Dalfiume and a Korean War tale drawn by Bill Montes and Ernie Bache. Issue #77 continues it with a desert tank chapter, plus a German sniper in a Luxembourg castle drawn by A. Martinez and a Marine beach fight drawn by Charles Nicholas and Vince Alascia. Both covers, by Rocke Mastroserio, misspell the hero's name as "Shultz."
