About Forbidden Worlds
Forbidden Worlds is an American horror and fantasy comic book series published by the American Comics Group (ACG) from 1951 to 1967, running for 145 issues. It was launched as a companion to ACG's Adventures into the Unknown and edited by Richard E. Hughes. It was an anthology of short tales of the fantastic, full of vampires, apocalypses, spooky towns and strange creatures.
The first issue, cover-dated July-August 1951, opens with "Demon of Destruction," drawn by Al Williamson and Frank Frazetta, and also carries Emil Gershwin's "The Way of the Werewolf" and Paul Reinman's "Love of a Vampire." Ken Bald drew its cover. Issue #2 includes "The League of Vampires," drawn by Charles Sultan. The writers of these early stories remain largely unknown.
When the Comics Code arrived in 1955, the series survived by toning down its content into milder fantasy. From 1957 on, Hughes wrote most of its stories himself under many pen names. The humor character Herbie Popnecker first appeared in issue #73 (December 1958), and the superhero Magicman debuted in issue #125 (February 1965). The series won the 1964 Alley Award for Best Regularly Published Fantasy Comic, and Dark Horse reprinted issues #1 to #4 in the 2012 hardcover Forbidden Worlds Archives Volume 1.
