About Give My Regards to Black Jack
Give My Regards to Black Jack is a Japanese medical comic (manga) written and drawn by Shuho Sato and serialized in Kodansha's Morning magazine from February 2002 to January 2006, and collected into 13 volumes. Its Japanese title, Burakku Jakku ni Yoroshiku, also appears in English as Say Hello to Black Jack, and it references Osamu Tezuka's manga Black Jack.
The story follows Eijiro Saito, a 25-year-old medical graduate interning at Eiroku University Hospital, who faces low wages, long hours and often apathetic doctors who care more about earning money and prestige than saving lives. His pay is meager, so he moonlights at an understaffed emergency room, and early in the first volume he finds himself alone in an operating room with a motorcycle accident victim.
The series received an Excellence Award at the 2002 Japan Media Arts Festival and shared the grand prize of the 2004 Japan Cartoonists Association Award. TBS aired a live-action television drama in 2003 with Satoshi Tsumabuki as Saito, and a sequel, Shin Black Jack ni Yoroshiku, ran in Shogakukan's Big Comic Spirits from 2007 to 2010. In 2012 Sato began allowing free secondary use of the series, commercial and non-commercial, without royalty payments, and that September an English edition titled Give My Regards to Black Jack went on sale on Amazon Kindle.
