About Gorgo
Gorgo is a monster comic book published by Charlton Comics from 1961 to 1965, based on the 1961 British film of the same name. Its first issue adapted the movie: a giant lizard-like creature, thrown up by a volcanic eruption off Ireland, is captured and put on display in London until its larger mother destroys much of the city to rescue it. Charlton then made Gorgo an ongoing series character for 23 issues.
Toonopedia says Joe Gill, the company's most prolific writer, wrote the series for its whole run. Spider-Man co-creator Steve Ditko drew the film adaptation in #1 and the Gorgo stories in #2 and #3. In #2, which the Grand Comics Database calls a sequel to the film, Gorgo and his mother head west to America, where she attacks New York City. The Atlantis story in #6, "And the Sea Spewed Death", was pencilled by Joe Sinnott and inked by Vince Colletta. Issues also carried short non-fiction features about sea creatures, such as "Wonders of the Deep!" in #1.
The title became Fantastic Giants with issue #24, its last, and Gorgo starred in a three-issue miniseries, Gorgo's Revenge, later The Return of Gorgo (1962 to 1964). IDW collected Ditko's Gorgo stories in 2013, and FantaCo gathered the Sinnott and Colletta issues as Gorgo Attacks! in 2021.
