About Journey Into Fear

Journey Into Fear is a horror comic from Superior Publishers Limited of Toronto, running 21 bi-monthly issues from May 1951 to September 1954. Each 36-page issue held four comic stories and a short text story. Jerry Iger's studio packaged comics for Superior from 1947 to 1954, and Matt Baker pencilled the two opening stories of issue #1. The Grand Comics Database, citing John Bell's Canuck Comics, calls that issue the first Canadian horror comic book.

Issue #18, dated March 1954, was edited by Harry L. Cohen in Brooklyn. The Grand Comics Database lists no artist or writer for its four comic stories. In "Doomed to Live Forever," a man's fountain of youth makes him devolve while his wife withers; in "Carnival of Death," shape-shifting killers from another dimension come through a carnival's hall of mirrors. "Here's to Horror!" follows a bigamist singer whose past comes back for him, and in "The Devil's Store" a shopkeeper named Mr. Scratch sells deadly practical jokes. A. A. Hayes is credited with the text story "Out of the Coffin."

Some of Superior's titles appeared in Fredric Wertham's 1954 book Seduction of the Innocent, Journey Into Fear #15 among them, according to Bell. After the Comics Code Authority formed, Superior's sales dwindled, and it closed in 1956. PS Publishing reprinted all 21 issues in three Pre-Code Classics: Journey into Fear hardcovers in 2016.
