About Mysteries of Unexplored Worlds
Mysteries of Unexplored Worlds was a Charlton Comics anthology comic of science fiction, supernatural horror and fantasy that ran for 48 issues from 1956 to 1965. A typical issue held four to six comic stories plus a two-page text story, and many tales ended with a twist or an ironic ending.
Most of the scripts were by Joe Gill, and the artists included Jon D'Agostino, Steve Ditko, Rocco "Rocke" Mastroserio and Bill Molno. Ditko, the future co-creator of Marvel's Spider-Man, drew 33 of its stories and 9 of its covers. Issue #25 (July 1961) has a signed Mastroserio cover, three more Mastroserio stories and a tale signed "Moltra" by Molno and Sal Trapani. Issue #33 (December 1962) has a cover by Dick Giordano and stories drawn by Mastroserio, Molno and Charles Nicholas, with Vince Alascia inking Nicholas. Pat Masulli is credited as editor of both.
In #46 (May 1965) the comic introduced Son of Vulcan, a superhero created by writer Pat Masulli and artist Bill Fraccio and described as Charlton's answer to Marvel's Thor. Issues #46 to #48 were titled Mysteries of Unexplored Worlds featuring Son of Vulcan, and from #49 the comic became Son of Vulcan. Since 2021, PS Publishing has reprinted issues of the series in collected volumes, with #25 in Volume 5 (2022).
