About Out of This World
Out of This World is a science fiction and horror anthology comic published by Charlton Comics in the 1950s, with 16 issues from August 1956 to December 1959. Each issue usually held four to six comic stories plus a two-page text story, mostly science fiction and supernatural horror.
Most of the scripts were by Joe Gill, and the artists included Steve Ditko, Rocke Mastroserio, Bill Molno and Charles Nicholas. Ditko, best known as the co-creator of Spider-Man and Doctor Strange, drew for issues #3 to #12 and #16. The Encyclopedia of Science Fiction says the Ditko-drawn stories tend to be the most interesting.
Issue #12, dated March 1959, has a Ditko cover and, unusually, no text story. It opens with Ditko's "The World Awaits," in which a scientist uncovers an age-old secret about ant mutation, and also holds his "A Living Doll" along with stories drawn by Bill Molno and Rocke Mastroserio. Fantagraphics reprinted the cover and both Ditko stories in 2013 in Impossible Tales: The Steve Ditko Archives Vol. 4. In 2015 Ditko and Robin Snyder published an issue #17 that continued the original numbering, and in 2017 PS Publishing collected all 16 original issues in three volumes.
