About Race for the Moon

Race for the Moon is a science fiction comic book published by Harvey Comics in 1958, running for three issues between March and November of that year. Harvey was long known for kids' comics such as Casper the Friendly Ghost, but this title belonged to its "Thrill Adventure" line, edited by Joe Simon. Each issue was an anthology of four comic stories plus one-page features, and the first opened with a page responding to the Soviet launch of Sputnik the year before.

Simon later wrote that Jack Kirby welcomed the work when Simon proposed the title. Kirby drew the four longer stories in both #2 and #3, and Al Williamson inked most of them, though Williamson recalled he had never really inked anybody else before. Issue #2 closes with "The Face on Mars," which, as The Encyclopedia of Science Fiction notes, came 18 years before the Viking 1 orbiter photographed a face-like mountain on Mars in 1976. Issue #3 introduced the Three Rocketeers, a captain, a sergeant and a scientist.

The series stopped after three issues, and material intended for a fourth appeared in Harvey's Blast-Off in 1965. Titan later reprinted Kirby's stories from #2 and #3 in The Simon and Kirby Library: Science Fiction (2013).
