CBR vs CBZ: what is the difference?

None you can see. A CBR and a CBZ hold the same thing, a comic's pages saved as images, and the comic looks identical in either. The difference is the box: a CBR is a RAR archive renamed to .cbr, and a CBZ is a ZIP archive renamed to .cbz. Both open free in your browser at livecomics.to.

The short answer: pick CBZ

For most readers CBZ is the better format. ZIP is an open format built into every major system, so Windows, macOS, iOS and Android can all unpack one with no extra software. A reader can pull any single page out of a ZIP without unpacking the rest, so big issues open fast. Making a RAR, by contrast, needs proprietary software. The pages inside are already compressed images, so a CBR is rarely much smaller.

Where CBR still makes sense

RAR archives can carry recovery data that repairs a damaged download, and a lot of older comic collections were packed that way. If your files are CBRs, there is no need to convert them just to read them: most comic readers open both, and so does this one.

Kobo, Kindle and other devices

Kobo e-readers open both CBR and CBZ on their own. Kindle e-readers open neither, so a comic has to become a PDF first and go over with Send to Kindle. Phones, tablets and computers open both in the browser at livecomics.to, with nothing to install. How to open CBR files, device by device

How to convert CBR to CBZ

Unpack the CBR with a RAR tool (on Windows 11, File Explorer can do it once you rename the file to .rar). Keep the page images in order, select them all and compress them into a ZIP: Compress on a Mac, or Compressed (zipped) folder on Windows. Rename the .zip to .cbz. Readers sort pages by file name, so names like 001.jpg and 002.jpg keep the order right. Going the other way, CBZ to CBR, needs proprietary RAR software, and there is rarely a reason to.

How LiveComics handles both

Both open free in your browser with no account, and the file never leaves your device. A CBZ is read one page at a time, so even a big one opens fast; a CBR is unpacked in memory first, which is why a CBR over 600 MB is too big for a browser tab. On a free shelf the difference disappears: a CBR up to 600 MB is repacked as a CBZ in your browser before it uploads, and bigger ones are unpacked on our servers.

Straight answers

What is the difference between CBR and CBZ?

Only the archive format: a CBR is a RAR file and a CBZ is a ZIP file, each renamed for comic readers. The page images inside are the same, so the comic looks identical.

Which is better, CBR or CBZ?

CBZ, for most people. ZIP opens on every major system without extra software, is an open format anyone can write, and lets a reader load one page at a time.

Is CBZ better quality than CBR?

No, the quality is identical. ZIP and RAR both store the page images untouched, so any difference in how a comic looks comes from how it was scanned, not from the format.

Does Kobo support CBR and CBZ?

Yes. Kobo e-readers open both formats on their own: copy the file onto the Kobo over USB and it appears in your library.

Can a Kindle read CBZ or CBR files?

No. Kindle e-readers open neither, so convert the comic to PDF and send it with Send to Kindle, or open it in the web browser of an Amazon Fire tablet.

How do I convert CBR to CBZ?

Unpack the CBR's images with a RAR tool, compress them into one ZIP in page order, and rename the .zip to .cbz. If you only want to read it here, skip the step: a CBR uploaded to a free LiveComics shelf is repacked as a CBZ automatically.

Can I just rename a CBR to CBZ?

Only if it is really a ZIP inside. Renaming does not change the format, but many CBR files are ZIPs with the wrong name, and readers that check the contents, like this one, open those either way.

How do I convert CBZ to PDF?

Rename the CBZ to .zip, unpack it, and combine the page images into one PDF in page order: print them to PDF from Preview on a Mac, or with Microsoft Print to PDF on Windows.

What do CBR and CBZ stand for?

Comic book RAR and comic book ZIP. Rarer cousins follow the same pattern: CB7 is a 7z archive and CBT is a TAR archive.

Can I read CBR and CBZ files online?

Yes. LiveComics opens both in any browser for free, with no account and no upload. A free shelf keeps them synced on every device, 1 GB with no card.
