An OPDS comic reader online for your own server

LiveComics is an OPDS comic reader that runs in your browser. Connect the OPDS catalog your Komga, Kavita, calibre or calibre-web server already serves, browse or search it, and pick the comics you want. We download each one on our side, and it opens on any phone, tablet or computer, page by page, one panel at a time, or read aloud. Your server has to be reachable from the internet at an https address.

How do I connect an OPDS catalog?

  1. In LiveComics, open your library, tap From a link next to Add, then choose Your library server.
  2. Pick your server type: Komga, Kavita, calibre, calibre-web or Other OPDS.
  3. Enter the server's https address and sign in with a Komga API key, the Kavita OPDS URL, or a user name and password, then press Connect.
  4. Browse your libraries or search, tick the issues you want and press Add. When they have downloaded, choose how to import them and press Add.

For Komga, calibre and calibre-web, the address you open the server at is enough: the OPDS catalog is found for you. You need a free account with a confirmed email, and you can connect up to 10 servers.

Does my OPDS server have to be online?

Yes, at a public https address. We fetch your comics from our servers, not from your phone, so a catalog that only answers at home, like http://192.168.1.20:8083/opds, localhost or a .local name, can't be reached from our side. Neither can a bare IP address or a Tailscale address that only your own devices can see. The address needs a name and a valid certificate.

How do I make a home server reachable?

There are three common ways. Run a reverse proxy with your own domain name and a free Let's Encrypt certificate. Use a Cloudflare Tunnel, which gives the server a public https name without opening a port on your router. Or turn on Tailscale Funnel, which shares one service from your tailnet at a public https address. Then open that address on your phone with Wi-Fi off: if it loads there, it is reachable from the internet.

Can I read comics from calibre or calibre-web?

Yes. Choose calibre for calibre's own content server, or calibre-web if you run that, and sign in with a user name and password. calibre's content server must use basic sign-in, which is its authentication mode setting, and in calibre-web the account needs permission to download. Comics kept as CBZ, CBR or PDF import; EPUB books show as not yet.

Which servers does it work with?

Komga, Kavita, calibre's content server and calibre-web, plus any other catalog that speaks OPDS 1.2. Komga and Kavita each have their own guide with the exact sign-in steps.

Can an OPDS reader read comics aloud?

This one can, once a comic is imported. Choose Voiced and every speech balloon is read in order by two synthetic narrators matched to each speaker, with sound effects and a score, and subtitles show each line as it is spoken. Panel descriptions for blind and low-vision readers can be added too.

What happens when I pick comics?

Our servers download each issue from yours, two at a time, so it won't use your data plan. Issues you already have are marked In your library, so you can see what is new before you pick. When the downloads finish, the usual import choices open, and if you use the same choices for every issue, any that are already in your library are skipped rather than added twice.

What does it cost?

Connecting your server and browsing it are free. Pages only and Panel view, which shows one panel at a time framed to fill the screen, are free on every issue. Voiced adds two synthetic narrators matched to each speaker, sound effects and a score, priced per issue in credits, and you see the price before you press Add. A free account imports 30 comics a month and holds 1 GB, about 20 issues, with no card. Collector lifts the import limit.

What do you keep from my server?

Only the comics you import, and your server's address so you can open it again. Your password is used while you browse and import, and it is never saved. A Komga API key or a Kavita OPDS URL can be remembered on your own device if you tick Remember this server on this device, and it is never stored on our servers. We only talk to the exact address you connected, so a link in your feed can't send us anywhere else.

Straight answers

What is an OPDS comic reader?

It is an app that reads the OPDS catalog a comic server publishes, so you can browse your library and download from it. LiveComics does that in the browser, then lets you read each comic page by page, panel by panel or out loud.

Can I use an OPDS reader online, without an app?

Yes. LiveComics runs in Safari, Chrome or any other browser on a phone, tablet or computer, so there is nothing to install.

Where do I find my calibre-web OPDS URL?

You don't need it. Enter the address you open calibre-web at and LiveComics finds the catalog, which calibre-web serves at /opds.

Can I connect a server on my home network?

Not directly. The server needs a public https address that we can reach from the internet. A reverse proxy, a Cloudflare Tunnel or Tailscale Funnel gives it one.

My server uses single sign-on. Will it work?

Only through an address that skips single sign-on for OPDS, or with an API key. We can't sign in through a login page on another site.

Is my password saved?

No. It is used while you browse and import, then dropped. A user that can only download is the safest one to connect.

Which files can I import?

CBZ, CBR and PDF comics, up to 2.6 GB each. EPUB books show on your server's shelves but can't be imported from it yet.

Is it free?

Yes, to connect, browse and read. A free account imports 30 comics a month with 1 GB of storage, and voices are paid per issue in credits.
