A free comic reader for Android phones and tablets

To read comics on Android, install Live Comics: Audio Comic Books from Google Play, then open any CBR or CBZ file with it from your file manager, your Downloads or the share button. Each issue reads as whole pages, one panel at a time, or read aloud with sound, on a phone or a tablet, and there are no ads. A free account holds your comics with no card, and your place follows you to every device.

How do I add my comics on Android?

  1. Install Live Comics: Audio Comic Books from Google Play. It runs on Android 7.0 or later, on phones and tablets.
  2. Make a free account, or sign in to the one you have. No card needed.
  3. Tap a CBR or CBZ file in your file manager or Downloads and choose Live Comics under Open with, or share it to Live Comics. You can also tap + Add Comics in your library and pick the file.
  4. Choose Pages only, Panel view or Voiced, then press Add. The issue lands on your shelf, ready to read.

Live Comics on Google Play

Open with and Share need version 1.4 or later of the app. If Live Comics is missing from the list, update it from Google Play.

Does Open with work for comic files?

Yes. Live Comics shows up under Open with for CBZ and CBR files, and for ZIP and RAR archives, since scanned comics are often shipped under those names. It shows up in the share sheet too, for one file or several at once. Either way the file goes to the usual import choices, and anything that is not a comic is turned away before it is uploaded.

Does it work on Android tablets?

Yes. The same app runs on Android tablets and foldables, upright or sideways, and the bigger screen shows a whole comic page large enough to read. On a phone, Panel view frames one panel at a time to fill the screen, so the lettering stays readable.

Can Android read comics aloud?

Yes. Choose Voiced when you add an issue and every speech balloon is read in order by two synthetic narrators matched to each speaker, with sound effects and a score, while the panels turn on their own and subtitles show each line as it is spoken. Full cast, where every main character gets their own voice, is a paid upgrade. Every issue on the free streaming shelf is voiced already, free to stream with a free account.

Does it have ads?

No. There are no ads in the app. Reading is free, and voices are priced per issue in credits, with the price shown before you buy.

Does my place follow me to my other devices?

Yes. Your library, shelves and reading place belong to your account, not to one device, so an issue you start here opens where you left off on any other screen you sign in on: the iPhone and iPad app, the Android app, the Windows app or a web browser.

What does it cost?

Reading is free. A free account holds 1 GB, about 20 issues, and imports 30 comics a month, with no card. Pages only and Panel view, which shows one panel at a time framed to fill the screen, are free on every issue. Voiced is priced per issue in credits, and you see the price before you press Add.
